Research Scientist

Overview The R&D Scientist leads superconductor development projects and helps our production team achieve product quality and manufacturing efficiency improvements. We work with a diverse, global customer base from industry and government that seeks state of the art Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn superconductors for innovative magnet projects. This is a high profile / industry visible position at a manufacturing firm with a worldwide reputation for excellence. The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant scientific discipline (typically materials science or physics). A PhD is preferred, as is experience in applied superconductivity. A candidate with some experience in low temperature superconductor development and manufacturing would be ideal. Good communication skills are required as the position involves extensive management and customer contact, and mentoring of junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: o Lead low and high temperature superconducting materials technology and product development projects, particularly in the Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn systems o Manage superconducting wire project milestones, deadlines, and budgets, utilizing formal tools and approaches e.g. FMEA, Agile project management, etc. o Interface with suppliers and customers to build relationships and resolve technical issues related to the fabrication and use of our products. Occasional travel to vendors and customers. o Develop and maintain proficiency with the processes and technical details necessary for successful superconducting wire manufacture, including acid and clean room practices, extrusion, rod and wire drawing, non-destructive testing (eddy current testing), failure analysis, and heat treatment furnace design and programming. o Use metallography and microscopy (light and SEM) to analyze and troubleshoot superconducting wire design issues. o Authors technical papers, documents and reports. Follows and understands the literature on superconducting wire. o Hands-on supervision and manufacture of superconducting strand (occasional work in a factory environment is required). Directs activities of R&D technicians in the fabrication and testing of superconducting strand. o Authors work instructions and work orders for production and R&D technicians. o Assists production department with product quality and effective manufacturing improvements. o Assists cryogenic test lab with issues related to maintenance, diagnoses and repair of superconducting magnets and measurement systems. Performs occasional electromagnetic testing of superconducting strand. o Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably requested by the Company from time to time. INDICATIVE PERFORMANCE MEASURES o R&D LTS wire projects delivered on time, to cost and to budget. o Development of new technologies or products to meet stakeholder expectations, as measured by market share and IP generation, including patent applications. o Feedback from cross functional team peers indicating a high level of collaborative engagement and problem solving support. Physical Demands: o This is a hands-on role. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
